<\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_column_text css=””]Fribourg is attracting more and more startups from elsewhere. How do you assess their applications?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yann Steulet:<\/strong> The first question is not just whether the technology is brilliant. We also look at whether it is a good match for Fribourg. Could it tap into the expertise available in the canton, such as ChemTech, the Adolphe Merkle Institute, and the Smart Living Lab? Together with Brigitte, Fri Up has developed a screening process that evaluates not only the commercial potential of the business pitch but also its fit within the ecosystem. The goal here is to quickly determine whether Fribourg can accelerate the project\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

Brigitte Baumann:<\/strong> What\u2019s pretty unique is that this initial assessment already creates value for the entrepreneur. Many places ask you to fill out a long application form before they even decide whether to meet you or not. What we do is almost the exact opposite. The entrepreneur sends us a few details, sometimes nothing more than a link to their website. We then prepare for the meeting, now with help from AI. This means that we can cut to the chase and address the real challenges right from the start. As a result, the entrepreneur leaves this initial meeting with tangible leads to pursue.<\/p>\n

Fifteen years ago, Fribourg was not readily associated with technology startups. What has changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

YS:<\/strong> The ecosystem has evolved tremendously. When I joined Fri Up four years ago, the mission was clear: take Fribourg to the next level by investing more of our energy in the development of high value-added startups. At the same time, companies like Bloom Biorenewables and Seprify have shown that startups can leverage the canton\u2019s scientific expertise and infrastructure. Today, when we refer startups to a Fribourg-based institute, we know they will find partners there who can promptly respond to their needs.<\/p>\n

BB: <\/strong>What I like is that Fribourg didn\u2019t try to copy other ecosystems. The canton looked at what worked elsewhere, drew on those strengths, and added what is unique to Fribourg. The best of the best\u2026 with that Fribourg twist. For example, the structures remain compact and human-centered. The actors in this space all know one another, decisions can be made quickly, and new ways of working can be adopted with little to no red tape. We must continue to embrace the \u201csmall is beautiful\u201d ethos.<\/p>\n

YS:<\/strong> The other major development is the closer link between research and industrialization. Many startups have to show that their technology is scalable. Rather than having to build out their own infrastructure, organizations like ChemTech allow them to clear these hurdles. Such support is highly sought after by entrepreneurs in Switzerland and internationally, and is a major asset for Fribourg.<\/p>\n

What does this collaboration look like in practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

YS:<\/strong> Say a startup is working on a solution for the energy sector. I can pick up the phone, call the strategy director of one of our industrial partners and immediately find out who I should talk to. Within a few days, everyone is sitting around the table. This also saves precious time \u2013 a few weeks can make all the difference for a startup.<\/p>\n

BB:<\/strong> Let\u2019s not forget quality of life. It\u2019s not simply a matter of hiring engineers. A startup has to convince talent that it is worth relocating for. Fribourg ticks a lot of boxes in this regard: it is strategically located between Lausanne and Zurich, offers an attractive environment, and boasts a strong industrial base.<\/p>\n

For many startups, access to funding remains challenging. What do investors expect from them?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BB:<\/strong> Good technology alone is not enough. Investors are looking for companies that have what it takes to turn their technology into a viable business model. You have to validate the innovation, test the process, and demonstrate its commercial potential. Fribourg\u2019s different centers of competence allow startups to reach some of these milestones, which minimizes the upfront investments they need to make before the first round of fundraising begins.<\/p>\n

YS:<\/strong> That\u2019s also where we come in. Between the initial idea and the first round of fundraising, you have to demonstrate that the technology works, that there is a market for it, and that the team is capable of seeing the project through. At Fri Up, together with Brigitte, we brief entrepreneurs on what investors expect from them. This puts them in a much stronger position when raising funds.<\/p>\n

BB:<\/strong> The next challenge is to raise Fribourg\u2019s profile among international investors. The ecosystem is currently very strong, but it needs to promote itself more effectively.<\/p>\n

In the medium term, what ambitions do you have for the Fribourg ecosystem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BB:<\/strong> I\u2019d love Fribourg to become a bioeconomy leader in Europe, and even globally. For many years, the thinking was that the extra cost of green technologies outweighed the benefits. Today, they meet real economic needs and companies now want to make the most of local resources, secure their supply chains, and reindustrialize certain production processes. Fribourg has everything it needs to play a major role in this transformation.<\/p>\n

YS:<\/strong> This shift is already underway. A growing number of startups are working on solutions centered on locally available resources like materials, energy, and biomass. The bioeconomy is emerging as a real driver of competitiveness.<\/p>\n

BB:<\/strong> What makes me optimistic is that Fribourg is not trying to become a carbon copy of Zurich or Boston. The canton is building its own model, drawing on its expertise, industrial base, and ability to quickly bring the right people and institutions together. When I talk about Fribourg, I find myself saying \u201cwe\u201d. That might be the greatest compliment I can pay it!<\/p>\n

\n

The Cruise Ship and The Speedboat<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Yann Steulet, the startup mindset is not the exclusive preserve of emerging companies. Before joining Fri Up, he oversaw innovation projects at Swisscom and Quickline. \u201cA large company is like a cruise ship: it moves forward with power, but takes a long time to change course. A startup is like a speedboat: it is constantly testing, pivoting and adapting. If you try to develop an innovative project within a large organization, internal processes often end up slowing down progress. By creating a standalone team, you give it the freedom to experiment. If the idea works, it can inspire the company as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brigitte Baumann believes that large corporations can also become more agile by embracing innovations developed outside their organization. \u201cLarge companies no longer seek to develop everything in-house. They are increasingly collaborating with startups or acquiring promising technologies. Given the challenges we face, whether it is the energy transition or the bioeconomy, open innovation is becoming essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
